Low Vision Services: The Scarborough Low Vision Centre at The Scarborough Hospital

What is Low Vision?

Eye diseases and disorders often leave the patient with vision that is not adequate to perform everyday tasks using conventional eyeglasses or contact lenses. The resultant vision impairment may be mild, moderate or profound and not ameliorated with either medication or surgery. We call vision of this nature "low vision".

Fortunately, there are many strategies utilizing magnification, glare control and electronic technology that can dramatically enhance the independence and function of consumers with serious vision impairment. Such technologies allow them to gain access to printed material, computers and enhance mobility and comfort.

Low Vision Assessment

In order to determine the type and degree of sight enhancement/substitution technology that  is best for you, the first step is to undergo a vision function and needsContrast testing assessment (often called a low vision assessment).  During the examination your level of vision function will be investigated with specialized assessment technology. The ability to differentiate contrast levels, dark adaptation and glare control will be discovered. Reading speed and optimal relative print size is established to enable the recommendation of specific print magnification and/or alternative strategies.

The prescription for eyeglasses will be established plus consideration given to their effectiveness. Physical limitations from other disorders such as arthritis always influence the type of low vision devices recommended. Visual Acuity

The low vision assessment is the first step on the road to self reliance.

Dr Shaw has developed computer based assessment protocols that are effective in the functional diagnosis of retinal pigment disorders, macular edema and other pathologies to better understand  and design rehabilitation options.

Our Shared Goal: Independent Living

According to the immediate and long term needs of patients with low vision various adaptive technology and magnification systems can be considered. Our aim is to promote and facilitate independence.

Independence means that retired persons can continue to be self reliant and in the case of children and working adults with impaired vision, to promote integration into education systems and workplaces. We work with many school boards and industries to provide effective solutions to assist with the vision needs of the individual.

High Technology Assessment

After a low vision assessment, it may be determined that you would benefit from adaptive technology. A high technology assessment can be provided in order to determine appropriate technology to access print and information in an electronic format with a personal computer or CCTV magnification system.

Large print, large monitors and text to speech computers can be reviewed as well as stand alone devices.

The fee for a high technology assessment (payable to the Low Vision Association) is $300
The Ministry of health provides funding from 75% to 100% of the assessment fee

To access the Assistive Devices Programme funding, a Low Vision Assessment is a requirement, registration with the CNIB is not required.

The fee for the Low Vision Assessment is currently not entirely insured by OHIP .
