Optometry: Eye Clinic (Dr Peter Shaw)Eye health and vision assessments for all ages and eye conditionsRoutine eye exams and vision assessments are important for the early detection of serious vision problems and eye disease. We offer digital retinal imaging for enhanced detection and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal pathologies. During your eye exam your pupils will be dilated to afford a better examination of the retina and ocular media. If dilation is a problem we recommend that you plan your day accordingly or let us know and we can easily reschedule the retinal exam. We are equipped to handle all kinds of patients. We can accommodate patients in wheelchairs, inpatients at The Scarborough Hospital and patients of all ages, you don't need a referral. Second Opinions I encourage second opinions, you are a consumer of health care first and a patient second. If you are not confident that you have made the right treatment decision I am happy to offer you mine or refer you to a colleague. Please bring your eyeglasses that you have problems with, sometimes, all they need is a proper alignment. Typically, patients wanting second opinions have the following complaints Difficulty viewing a desktop computer (no one suggested ergonomic computer lenses) Diplopia with their eyeglasses (no account was made as to address the anisometropia) Difficulty with reading (the progressive lens design wasn't appropriate for the chosen frame) Difficulty with vision in general (the patient was not made aware and wasn't treated for vision disorders such as keratoconus or macular degeneration) The doctor didn't explain things well (an all too common problem) Their distance vision is blurred with their progressive lenses (they received a primitively designed progressive lens) As a general rule, patients are unhappy when their needs are not fully assessed and addressed. Some vision disorders need special care Specifically patients that have undergone eye surgery usually need specially designed eyeglasses or contact lenses to accommodate a drastic change in the way that they see. If you have a prescription that you have difficulty adapting to I can help. I have successfully designed and supplied over 2000 pairs of eyeglasses to accommodate the needs of patients with surgically induced anisometropia and astigmatism. Binocular Vision is Important Many vision problems arise out of lack of coordination between the two eyes. There are many causes of binocular vision dysfunction and sometimes the eyeglasses themselves cause more problems than they solve. Fortunately there is Lens Wizard, a computer simulation programme that allows us to predict and avoid potential spectacle induced adaptation problems. Some binocular vision problems require exercises, prisms or other therapies, after a comprehensive binocular vision and aniseikonia assessment we are in a controlling position to consider treatment options. Fees and Charges The fee for your eye exam may be covered by your employee benefits. Children, seniors and those with medical need, provincial disability and assistance are generally covered by OHIP. Some advanced diagnostic test procedures are not presently covered by third parties such as OHIP. These include retinal imaging, low vision assessments, occupational assessments, contrast sensitivity and some vision function tests. We will advise you about these optional tests and charges at the time of, or while booking, your appointment. Schedule of fees: (subject to change without notice) effective September 2008
Eye Surgery Co-management and Coordination. If you are contemplating cataract or refractive surgery it is important to arrive at an endpoint refractive error that suits your needs and allows optimal binocular vision coordination. I have assisted many patients in successfully communicating their needs to their surgeon ensuring enhanced post operative results and fewer complications. Often, an unbiased analysis is helpful in the decision making process.
